On this day in 1969, the LGBTQ community that frequented the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted another night of routine discrimination, harassment, and arrest because of their identity. As police began to detain people for violating the state’s gender-appropriate clothing statute, onlookers attempted to intervene in the violence. Six days of protests and riots ensued, ultimately galvanizing the gay rights movement internationally.
