Found an interesting thread through Mo Ryan, from a blogger/tweeter who worked as a script reader in Hollywood for years – the first gatekeeper at a production company or agency, in other words- and is currently a writers’ assistant.
A lot of people say their work is ‘character driven,’ and many like to think it is … but the truth is that this is quite hard to do in practice, and even harder to do with consistency – especially in a medium like episodic network television.
So many exogenous factors have an impact on a TV show’s stories and finished product that producing one that’s consistently of high quality and truly character-driven is quite a feat, especially over a number of seasons.
