To help combat climate change, officials in Los Angeles are painting roads white. As a result of something called the “urban heat island effect”, large cities are on average 5 degree F warmer than the surrounding area. Painting roads white with a special paint will mean that they will absorb less heat from the sun which will lower temperatures and help cut down on air conditioning and other problems caused by high temperatures in urban areas.
